Indian Youth Fight Back: A Lesson for Nigeria?

Intro: In Nigeria, a phrase often whispered with a sigh, 'this country will not kill us', encapsulates the daily grind of survival against systemic odds. From epileptic power supply to crumbling infrastructure, Nigerians, especially our vibrant youth, are experts at navigating turbulent waters. But what happens when the very ladder to a better future – education – is riddled with holes, corruption, and a blatant disregard for merit? Across the globe, in a bustling democracy not too dissimilar from ours, a movement is brewing that should make every Nigerian sit up and take notice. The youth in India, frustrated by exam malpractice and government inaction, have taken to the streets, adopting the very insult hurled at them by their own Chief Justice – 'cockroaches' – as a badge of honour. Their fight, born out of despair and a joke, has now escalated into a full-blown demand for accountability, echoing the silent cries of many Nigerian students.

What Is Happening on the Ground: A Mirror to Our Struggles

Imagine, if you will, thousands of young Nigerians, armed with nothing but their frustration and a fierce determination, camping out on the streets of Abuja or Lagos, defying police orders, under the scorching sun. That is precisely the scene unfolding in New Delhi, India. Supporters of the 'Cockroach Janta Party' (Cockroach People's Party), a Generation Z political movement, have turned the Indian capital into a protest ground, demanding the resignation of federal education minister, Dharmendra Pradhan. Why? Because like a recurring nightmare that haunts our own academic landscape, exam papers are leaking, and scores are being manipulated, shattering the hopes and dreams of millions.

Abhijeet Dipke, the charismatic leader of this viral movement, recently returned from Boston University in the United States to amplify the protests. He's channeling the simmering anger among India's youth, a demographic that makes up nearly half of the country's 1.4 billion population. Does this sound familiar? Nigeria, too, boasts a youthful population – a demographic dividend waiting to be harnessed, or, if neglected, a ticking time bomb of unfulfilled potential and grievances. Frequent leaks of exam papers and discrepancies in exam scores have caused widespread outrage among young people in India, who are already burdened by the pressures of studying and seeking jobs.

“Na only for here dem dey hear say exam paper leak? This India matter just dey show us wetin dey happen for our own backyard – the youth are tired, and something has to give.” – A popular reaction shared on Nigerian social media.

The Main Issues: A Universal Cry for Justice

The core of the Indian protest resonates deeply with the challenges faced by our own educational system. When the integrity of examinations is compromised, the very foundation of meritocracy crumbles. Students, who burn the midnight oil, make immense sacrifices, and sometimes even go hungry to afford school fees and exam registrations, are left feeling cheated and betrayed. The Indian chief justice's flippant comment in May, equating the youth with 'cockroaches', inadvertently sparked a movement. Dipke's casual post on X – "What if all cockroaches came together?" – went viral, demonstrating the power of shared frustration and collective action.

The Cockroach Janta Party's Instagram followers quickly swelled past 22 million, doubling that of India's ruling party. This isn't just about exam papers; it's about a generation's growing disillusionment with governance, a belief that the system is rigged against them. It's about accountability, transparency, and the fundamental right to a fair chance. Since staging their first protest in New Delhi on June 6, Dipke and his movement have taken their message to several Indian cities, drawing hundreds of supporters, mirroring the kind of organic, youth-led movements we occasionally see ignite across Nigeria.

The Impact on Daily Life: When Futures Hang in the Balance

The cancellation of a major medical entrance examination in India, after question papers were leaked, broke the resolve of students like 18-year-old Sachin Kumar, who had studied for a year. "It broke my resolve. Students slip into depression, and no one cares," he told Al Jazeera, lamenting that he hasn't picked up his books since. This sentiment is heartbreakingly familiar to Nigerian students who face similar disruptions with JAMB, WAEC, and university admissions. The financial toll on families is immense – money spent on extra lessons, transportation, and registration fees, all potentially wasted due to systemic failures. The psychological impact is perhaps even greater; a generation growing up with a deep-seated distrust in institutions and a profound sense of hopelessness.

India's temporary ban on the Telegram messaging app to curb leaks, a move critics call a "Band-Aid solution", is also something we've seen variants of in Nigeria, where authorities often scramble for quick fixes instead of addressing root causes. The tragic suicides of more than a dozen students across India between two exam dates are a stark, painful reminder of the extreme pressure young people face globally, and the dire consequences of government indifference. "I have no faith in the fairness of this exam anymore, or any other competitive exam for that matter," Kumar said. "Everything in India has been compromised by the incompetent ministers who believe power is their inheritance." This feeling of inherited power and unaccountability is a bitter pill many Nigerians also swallow daily.

Let's consider the stark realities that young people in both countries face:

While the numbers may differ, the underlying narrative of youth struggle and systemic challenges remains strikingly similar across continents. The Indian protest is not just a local issue; it’s a global symptom of youth alienation when governance fails to protect their fundamental rights and aspirations.

What Needs to Be Done: A Call for Accountability and Action

The resolve of the Indian protesters, who insist they will not leave New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar until Minister Pradhan resigns, offers a powerful lesson in persistent civic engagement. This kind of unwavering demand for accountability, if successful, would be a first in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 12 years in power. Dipke and his 'cockroaches' are betting on the power of collective will, and they believe resignation is imminent. "If the government thinks they can exhaust us, they are mistaken," he declared. "We will remain here."

For Nigeria, this unfolding drama in India should serve as a wake-up call. Our youth, too, are at a breaking point, constantly battling a system that often feels designed to frustrate rather than empower. What needs to be done? Firstly, we need genuine, systemic reforms in our examination bodies to stamp out malpractice and restore faith in the sanctity of results. This means not just 'Band-Aid solutions' but a thorough overhaul, incorporating technology and strict oversight.

Secondly, there must be a culture of accountability among our leaders. Ministers and heads of parastatals whose departments are embroiled in scandals must be held responsible, with real consequences, not just shuffled around or protected by political patronage. This would send a clear message that public office is a trust, not an inheritance. Thirdly, we must create viable economic opportunities for our youth, beyond just academic qualifications. A fair education system is only one part of the equation; a thriving economy with jobs is the other. Finally, our leaders must actively listen to the voices of the youth, engage with their concerns, and see their passion not as a threat, but as a vital force for national development. The 'cockroaches' of India are demonstrating that when ignored, the youth will find their voice, and when they come together, they can shake the foundations of power. It’s a lesson Nigeria, for its own stability and future, must heed.
