New US Election Film: A Warning for Nigeria?

Intro: In Nigeria, election season is never just about ballots; it's about the very fabric of our society. The air thickens with anticipation, hope, and often, the bitter taste of suspicion. We've seen firsthand how unverified claims and baseless accusations can unravel the trust between citizens and their leaders, fueling instability and distracting us from the pressing daily struggles of survival. It's a dance we know too well, and it's why a new development from halfway across the world, in the United States, rings with an uncomfortable familiarity, serving as a stark reminder of the dangers of election denialism.

What Is Happening on the Ground

There's a group in America, called 'True the Vote,' known for pushing debunked claims about their 2020 presidential election. They released a film then, '2000 Mules,' which was widely discredited, yet it continued to fan the flames of distrust. Now, they are back, reportedly preparing to release another documentary titled 'Trap,' a name chosen, as one pastor involved claims, 'because people are trapped.' This new film aims to rehash old allegations of widespread election fraud, specifically targeting Black communities in American cities like Detroit, Atlanta, and Philadelphia.

These are not just abstract claims. The film's narrative appears to be built on allegations, already dismissed by multiple courts for lack of evidence, suggesting a systematic scheme to register former residents and cast votes under false registrations. Imagine such claims taking root in our own communities – in Ajegunle, in Kano's old city, or in the sprawling suburbs of Abuja. The very idea of votes being manipulated, especially concerning vulnerable populations, strikes a raw nerve here. We've grappled with similar fears during our own electoral cycles, where allegations of 'ghost voters' or manipulated registers in disadvantaged areas are not uncommon. The group behind 'Trap' is said to be working with a Detroit pastor, Lorenzo Sewell, who, despite admitting he hasn't seen the film and has no evidence for his claims, insists he has a 'proven system' to detect cheating. His assertions, like 'Black people don't vote absentee,' have been challenged by studies indicating the opposite. This narrative, if unchallenged, could easily be imported and twisted to suit local political agendas, further eroding faith in our hard-won democratic processes.

"Every election, na so so story we dey hear. From fake results to people wey say dem no vote but their name dey ballot. When will our votes truly count? This kind talk just dey make us tire for politics." - Mama Ngozi, market trader in Lagos.

The Main Issues

The core issue here is the weaponization of doubt and the systematic undermining of democratic institutions through unsubstantiated claims. For a nation like Nigeria, still consolidating its democratic gains, this foreign example is not just a distant news item; it's a cautionary tale. When powerful groups, even from abroad, propagate narratives of widespread fraud without credible evidence, it creates a dangerous precedent. It emboldens those who would rather discredit the electoral process than accept legitimate outcomes. In our context, this can lead to post-election violence, prolonged legal battles that drain national resources, and a general sense of apathy among the populace, particularly our youth.

The specific allegations in 'Trap' – about officials orchestrating schemes to register non-existent voters and cast false ballots – resonate deeply with past challenges faced by our Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). While INEC has made significant strides in voter registration integrity, the ghost of past malpractices still haunts public perception. Such films, even if debunked, feed into existing anxieties, making it harder for our citizens to trust the process, the results, and ultimately, the legitimacy of their elected representatives. It’s a distraction from real governance issues and the daily struggle for survival that impacts millions of Nigerians.

The Impact on Daily Life

For the average Nigerian trying to make ends meet, the constant clamor of election fraud allegations, whether homegrown or echoed from abroad, translates into real-world hardship. Political instability, fueled by contested election results, scares away foreign investors who could bring jobs and development. It diverts government attention and resources from critical infrastructure projects, healthcare, and education to endless legal battles and maintaining security.

Our youth, who represent the future of this nation, are particularly vulnerable. When they see their elders constantly questioning the legitimacy of leaders, or when electoral processes appear rigged, it breeds cynicism. This cynicism can manifest as apathy towards civic participation, a belief that their vote doesn't matter, or, worse, a susceptibility to radical ideologies that promise quick fixes outside the democratic framework. The daily grind – the struggle for steady electricity, affordable food, quality education, and secure employment – becomes even more burdensome when the foundation of governance is perceived as shaky. Each unproven allegation of fraud, amplified by social media, adds another layer of doubt, making it harder to build a stable, prosperous Nigeria where everyone can thrive.

Consider how easily such narratives can be tailored to our context, pitting ethnic groups against each other, or urban poor against rural populations, simply by alleging widespread fraud in certain demographics. The claims by Pastor Sewell about 'names not conducive to our community' or 'switching votes' echo the kind of divisive rhetoric that has, in the past, threatened our national unity and stalled progress.

What Needs to Be Done

As Nigerians, we must learn from these distant echoes of electoral discord. Our robust media, civil society organizations, and particularly our vigilant citizens, have a critical role to play. First, we must demand verifiable evidence for any claims of electoral malpractice, refusing to be swayed by mere allegations or sensationalized narratives, whether they originate from home or abroad. Our electoral bodies, like INEC, must continue to strengthen their transparency, accountability, and the integrity of their processes, from voter registration to result collation, making it harder for false claims to gain traction.

Secondly, civic education is paramount. Our youth need to understand the true value of their vote and the destructive power of misinformation. They must be empowered to identify fake news and challenge baseless narratives that seek to undermine our democracy. Finally, our judicial system must remain a steadfast pillar of justice, ensuring that all electoral disputes are resolved fairly, transparently, and expeditiously, based on presented evidence, not on political pressure or popular opinion. By doing so, we not only safeguard our own democracy but also set an example for other African nations grappling with similar challenges, proving that a united, informed populace is the strongest defense against those who seek to sow division and distrust for their own gain.
