Are We Safe? Nigerians Turn to Alarms for Help

Intro: Every morning, as millions of Nigerians step out of their homes, a silent prayer often accompanies their determined strides: 'May I return safely.' This isn't merely a cultural formality; it's a stark reflection of a daily reality where personal security has become a paramount, often harrowing, concern. From the bustling markets of Lagos to the quiet farmlands of the North, the shadow of insecurity looms large, pushing ordinary citizens to seek innovative, sometimes desperate, ways to protect themselves and their loved ones.

What Is Happening on the Ground

Our nation, a beacon of resilience, is currently grappling with a surge in various forms of insecurity. Kidnappings for ransom have become a chilling daily headline, with over 3,141 kidnappings reported in 1,274 incidents nationwide in 2025 alone. 'One-chance' syndicates terrorize commuters in our major cities, and armed robberies remain a constant threat to homes and businesses. The youth, who represent the vibrant future of Nigeria, are particularly vulnerable, often targets in their daily commute to school or work, or simply while trying to build a livelihood. Young women, especially, navigate public spaces with an added layer of apprehension; 30 percent of girls and women between ages 15 and 49 have reported cases of sexual abuse. The traditional reliance on communal vigilance and formal security agencies is increasingly being questioned as response times falter and resources are stretched thin. This grim reality has fostered a pervasive sense of fear, forcing Nigerians to look beyond conventional measures and embrace personal safety tools that were once considered luxuries in other parts of the world. In the first quarter of 2025 alone, Nigeria witnessed at least 475 incidents of insecurity, resulting in 1,420 fatalities.

"When the police take ages to arrive, or sometimes don't even come, what choice do we have but to protect ourselves? These little alarms might just be that extra second we need." – Amina Abubakar, a market trader in Abuja, voicing a common sentiment.

The Main Issues

The rise of personal safety alarms in Nigeria isn't just about new gadgets; it's a symptom of deeper societal and governance realities. Firstly, there's the undeniable challenge of state capacity. Despite efforts, our security apparatus often struggles with manpower, equipment, and efficient coordination, leading to gaps in public safety. This creates a vacuum that opportunistic criminals are quick to exploit. Secondly, economic hardship exacerbates the problem. High unemployment rates, especially among the youth, push some into crime as a desperate means of survival, further entrenching the cycle of insecurity. This neglect of the youth perpetuates a cycle of insecurity and underdevelopment. Thirdly, there's a significant trust deficit between citizens and security agencies. Many Nigerians feel that reporting crimes can be a bureaucratic nightmare, sometimes even leading to further victimization or extortion. In such an environment, waiting for help feels like a gamble. Devices like the She's Birdie alarm, which activates a loud 130-decibel siren and strobe light, or the Sabre clip-on alarm for outdoor activities, offer a sense of immediate, personal agency when external help feels distant. The idea is to create a diversion, attract attention, and buy precious seconds for escape or intervention, rather than relying solely on a system that is often perceived as overburdened or unresponsive.

The Impact on Daily Life

For the average Nigerian, the constant threat to personal safety doesn't just manifest as fear; it has tangible impacts on daily life and economic survival. Parents worry incessantly about their children's journeys to school. Commuters plan their routes meticulously, often avoiding certain times or areas, directly affecting productivity and business. Young entrepreneurs, particularly those in the gig economy or small retail, are exposed to higher risks. The mental toll is immense, leading to chronic stress and anxiety, as many young people are learning survival instincts before civic confidence. Furthermore, investing in personal safety, whether it's through alarms, self-defense classes, or even hiring private security, represents an unplanned and often significant financial burden for households already struggling with rising inflation and a fluctuating economy. Devices like InvisaWear, with its subscription-based 24/7 ADT access, or Garmin devices offering satellite connectivity for remote areas, introduce a new layer of complexity. While promising enhanced safety, their subscription models (like She's Birdie's $5 per month, or InvisaWear's reported $14.99 to $20 per month) pose a challenge in a country where disposable income is scarce and consistent access to foreign currency for such payments can be an issue. Even the upfront cost of these devices, some running into tens of thousands of Naira (e.g., Sabre alarms at ₦23,400 to ₦40,799, She's Birdie at ₦74,749, and Garmin satellite communicators exceeding ₦1,000,000), can be prohibitive, creating a divide where enhanced safety becomes a privilege, not a right.

What Needs to Be Done

Addressing Nigeria's security challenges and the growing reliance on personal safety devices requires a multi-faceted approach, balancing immediate citizen empowerment with long-term systemic reforms. Firstly, on the individual level, awareness and preparedness are key. Campaigns educating Nigerians, especially youth and women, on simple self-defense techniques and the effective use of personal safety alarms can be vital. Local vendors and entrepreneurs can explore more affordable, locally manufactured versions of these alarms that cater to the economic realities of the average Nigerian, perhaps even incorporating features specifically designed for our local context, like long-lasting battery life to contend with erratic power supply. Secondly, community vigilance needs to be strengthened. Neighborhood watches, leveraging local leadership and technology, can act as a crucial first line of defense, complementing formal security efforts. This grassroots approach, when properly supported, can significantly deter crime. Thirdly, and most critically, governance must improve. This means investing significantly in our security agencies – better training, modern equipment, improved welfare for personnel, and stringent accountability measures to rebuild public trust. Swift and transparent justice for criminals, coupled with rehabilitation programs, is also essential. Furthermore, addressing the root causes of insecurity, such as poverty, unemployment, and lack of education, through robust economic policies and youth empowerment initiatives, will reduce the allure of crime. While personal safety alarms offer a valuable interim solution, the ultimate goal must be a Nigeria where every citizen feels secure, not just by carrying a device, but by living in a society where safety is a guaranteed right, upheld by effective governance and a thriving community spirit.
