World Cup Big Plan: Good News or Bad for Our Streets?

Intro: Imagine sitting on a ‘danfo’ bus, stuck in Lagos traffic, the humid air thick with exhaust fumes and the distant drone of generators. You're thinking about the rising cost of petrol, how to pay school fees, or just where the next meal will come from. Then, you hear news about football's global governing body, FIFA, dreaming of an even bigger World Cup – a massive 64-team tournament. On the surface, it sounds exciting, doesn't it? More matches, more fanfare, perhaps even more chances for African nations. But for us, the everyday Nigerians grappling with daily realities, this grand vision sparks crucial questions: What does this mean for our pockets? Our communities? And our beloved 'Super Eagles'?

What Is Happening on the Ground: The World Cup Gets Bigger

The football world just barely wrapped up its first 48-team World Cup, and already, FIFA President Gianni Infantino is openly talking about an even grander spectacle: a 64-team World Cup. This isn't just a slight tweak; it's a huge jump from the traditional 32-team format we knew for decades, and even a big step up from the current 48-team plan for 2026. Infantino suggests this expansion could offer 'smaller countries a chance to participate' and 'the incentive to keep improving'. While the idea might sound like a golden ticket for nations like ours, the cold hard truth is that such an expansion brings colossal logistical and financial implications.

Think about it: a 64-team tournament would mean a whopping 128 matches – that's 24 more than the 2026 edition and double the old 32-team format. This would require more stadiums, more hotels, vastly improved transport systems, and a longer tournament duration, potentially stretching over six weeks or more. Already, the 2030 World Cup, planned for Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, with additional ceremonial matches in South America, is presenting 'a formidable organisational challenge' across six host nations. Saudi Arabia, set to host alone in 2034, is also facing 'significant scheduling questions', especially with the timing of Ramadan. For an African nation, or even a joint bid, the scale of this challenge is not just formidable, it's monumental, especially when measured against the backdrop of our existing developmental struggles.

"Another World Cup expansion? Abeg, let's fix our own league first and build proper pitches for our children before we start dreaming of hosting a 64-team party. Charity begins at home!" - A common sentiment overheard in a local barbershop.

The Main Issues: Beyond the Beautiful Game

While the prospect of more African teams on the global stage is appealing, the economic and governance realities of such an expansion are sobering. UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin and Asian Football Confederation President Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa have both voiced strong opposition, questioning where such expansions might end and arguing it's 'not a good idea for the World Cup itself' or 'our qualifiers either'. Their concerns are not just about the game's integrity but also about the potential shift in financial influence. If World Cup qualifying matches become less commercially valuable due to easier qualification, regional confederations could become 'increasingly dependent on FIFA's own distributions', centralizing power and money with the global body.

For Nigeria and other African nations, this centralization of power raises governance questions. How transparent would the flow of FIFA funds be? Would the colossal investments required for hosting such a tournament genuinely benefit the wider population, or would they be siphoned off through inefficient contracts and corruption, leaving behind white elephants instead of sustainable development? Our history is riddled with stories of grand projects that never fully materialize or become conduits for illicit enrichment. A World Cup of this scale could amplify these existing vulnerabilities.

Furthermore, consider the youth. Football is more than a game here; it's a pathway, a dream, a hope for survival for millions. While Infantino suggests expanded participation, does this truly translate into better opportunities for our grassroots football? Or does it merely expand the elite club, further marginalizing local leagues and academies that struggle for basic funding and infrastructure? The focus on a gigantic international spectacle might detract from the urgent need to invest in our domestic leagues and youth development programmes, which are the true nurseries of future talent.

The Impact on Daily Life: More Than Just Kicking a Ball

The talk of a 64-team World Cup might seem far removed from the everyday hustles of Nigerians, but its implications could ripple through our daily lives. If Nigeria, perhaps in a joint bid with another African nation like Ghana or even a broader West African coalition, were to host such an event, the economic strain would be immense. Massive construction projects for stadiums, hotels, and transport infrastructure would require huge capital, potentially diverting funds from critical sectors like education, healthcare, and power supply. While such projects could create temporary jobs, the long-term benefit for the majority of the population is often debatable, especially if these projects are rushed and lack proper oversight.

Think about the pressure on our already fragile infrastructure. Increased demand for electricity, water, and security for millions of visitors could further burden our cities, leading to more frequent outages, water shortages, and exacerbated traffic. The cost of living could spike in host cities as resources become stretched and prices inflate. For the average 'mama put' seller or 'okada' rider, the brief boom in business during the tournament might be quickly overshadowed by the sustained economic pressure before and after the event.

Moreover, the international football calendar is already 'congested', and adding more matches would 'increase pressure on domestic leagues'. This means our Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL), which often struggles with scheduling and funding, could face even greater challenges, potentially impacting the livelihoods of local players and staff. The grand global spectacle might inadvertently dim the light on our own local stars and competitions.

What Needs to Be Done: Prioritizing Our People

As Nigerian journalists and citizens, we must approach this conversation with a clear-eyed view of our national priorities. While the allure of hosting a World Cup is undeniable, especially one as grand as a 64-team tournament, we must first ask ourselves: At what cost to the average Nigerian? Is this truly the best allocation of our limited resources?

Instead of chasing a potentially unsustainable dream, our leaders, both in government and in sports administration, should prioritize:

• Grassroots Development: Invest heavily in local football academies, provide proper playing fields, and ensure our youth have access to quality coaching and facilities. This builds a sustainable pipeline of talent and offers genuine opportunities.
• Strengthening Domestic Leagues: The NPFL needs significant, transparent investment to improve its structure, finances, and competitiveness. A strong local league is the backbone of any footballing nation.
• Prudent Infrastructure Development: Any major infrastructure project, whether for sports or otherwise, must be transparently managed, prioritize local content, and be integrated into broader national development plans, rather than being solely driven by external pressures.
• Inter-African Collaboration: If Africa must host a World Cup, it should be a truly pan-African effort, with equitable distribution of benefits and a focus on leveraging the event for sustainable regional development, not just a temporary show. This would require unprecedented cooperation and trust between nations like Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, and others.

The dream of seeing our 'Super Eagles' lift the World Cup trophy is shared by every Nigerian. But that dream should not come at the expense of our children's education, accessible healthcare, or reliable power supply. FIFA's vision of a bigger World Cup offers a chance for global conversations, but for us, it's an opportunity to critically examine our national aspirations and ensure that any footballing grandeur serves the everyday Nigerian first. Let's build a stronger Nigeria, from the ground up, and then perhaps, when our house is truly in order, we can host the world with pride and lasting benefit.
