Nigeria to Host RegTech Africa Conference & Expo, Emphasizing Local Innovation and Digital Transformation

Nigeria is poised to take centre stage in continental policy and technology discourse as it prepares to host the highly anticipated 2026 RegTech Africa Conference & Expo (RACE 2026). Scheduled to convene global leaders, innovators, and policymakers from May 20th to 22nd, 2026, at the prestigious State House Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa, Abuja, this landmark event underscores the nation's commitment to fostering local innovation and accelerating digital transformation across Africa.

The conference, operating under the distinguished patronage of the Office of the Vice President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, highlights a strategic collaboration with the Presidential Committee on Economic and Financial Inclusion (PreCEFI) and the Inter-Governmental Action Group Against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA). This powerful synergy signals a unified national and regional effort to tackle regulatory and infrastructure challenges that currently impede cross-border trade, finance, and digital innovation throughout the continent. According to Mr. Cyril Okoroigwe, Chairman of the Organising Committee, RACE 2026 is envisioned as Africa's premier platform for dialogue at the nexus of regulation, technology, and economic development.

Anchored on the theme, “Building Trust, Infrastructure, Inclusion, and Policy for a Borderless Economy,” the conference aligns with the ambitious aspirations of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The AfCFTA, projected to integrate a staggering $3.4 trillion market encompassing approximately 1.4 billion people across 54 countries, represents an unparalleled opportunity for economic growth. However, fragmented regulations, weak interoperability, and pervasive regulatory uncertainty continue to constrain the full potential of cross-border trade, payments, and digital services, leading to significant opportunity costs for African economies.

Data-Driven Insights: Quantifying the RegTech Imperative

The economic ramifications of regulatory friction within Africa’s burgeoning digital landscape are substantial. While the AfCFTA promises a $3.4 trillion market, inefficiencies stemming from disparate regulatory frameworks and compliance hurdles create a tangible drag on this potential. Robust data estimation suggests that even a conservative annual loss of 0.5% of the AfCFTA's projected value due to regulatory friction translates to an opportunity cost of approximately $17 billion. The strategic adoption and integration of RegTech solutions across the continent are projected to significantly mitigate these losses, potentially recovering 30% to 50% of this value, equating to an annual economic unlock of between $5.1 billion and $8.5 billion. This highlights RegTech not merely as a compliance tool, but as a critical enabler of economic integration and growth within the 'Africonomy' vision.

RACE 2026 will feature an impressive lineup of over 50 world-class speakers and facilitate engagement across 10 thematic tracks, drawing more than 1,000 in-person and virtual participants from across Africa and the global financial and technology ecosystems. The hybrid programme will encompass ministerial dialogues, regulators' CEO forums, innovation showcases, and meticulously curated B2B and B2G networking sessions, designed to forge impactful public-private partnerships. A significant highlight will be the hosting of the prestigious Global Startup World Cup Tournament – Regional Challenge, offering African startups a unique global stage to pitch their innovative solutions. The winner of this regional challenge will advance to the grand finale in Silicon Valley, vying for a substantial $1,000,000 investment prize, thereby unlocking crucial access to global capital, mentorship, and markets.

The application deadline for the Startup World Cup Regional Challenge is March 31, 2026, with finalists set to be announced on April 15, 2026. Startups across diverse sectors including Fintech, RegTech, AI, Cybersecurity, HealthTech, AgriTech, Climate Tech, E-commerce, Payments, and Digital Identity are encouraged to apply, underscoring the broad spectrum of innovation Nigeria aims to champion. This initiative not only showcases African ingenuity but also positions Abuja as a vital launchpad for the continent’s most promising technology ventures. Nigeria's role as host solidifies its growing stature as a continental hub for policy dialogue, financial innovation, and digital economic leadership, ultimately contributing to Africa's broader journey towards integrated digital markets, enhanced investment confidence, and inclusive economic growth.
