Beyond the Metros: NITDA's iHatch 5.0 Decentralizes Tech Incubation Across Nigeria's 36 States and FCT
Nigeria's tech regulator, NITDA, in partnership with JICA, launches the 5th iHatch Cohort, targeting 37 innovation hubs across all states and the FCT. The program aims to standardize incubation, foster 5 startups per hub for a year, and build on past successes like 90% startup incorporation and 1,000 jobs, strengthening Nigeria's digital economy projected to reach $18.3 billion by 2026.
In a significant stride towards decentralizing and fortifying its burgeoning digital landscape, Nigeria's tech regulator, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), through its Office for Nigerian Digital Innovation (ONDI), has partnered with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to launch applications for the fifth cohort of the iHatch Startup Incubation Programme. This pivotal initiative, known as the iHatch Cohort 5, specifically targets 37 innovation hubs across Nigeria – one in each of the nation's 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) – as of March 2026.
The iHatch Cohort 5 is strategically designed to address the historical imbalance in startup support, which has largely been concentrated in major urban centers like Lagos and Abuja. By focusing on strengthening local innovation hubs, the program aims to standardize incubation quality and enhance investment readiness outcomes across all regions. ONDI National Coordinator Victoria Fabunmi emphasized that the initiative 'builds stronger hubs, standardises quality, and boosts investment readiness across all regions,' tackling geographic gaps to scale local innovation. Eligible hubs, which must have operated for at least one year with demonstrable local engagement and adequate infrastructure for incubation activities, have until March 16, 2026, to submit their applications.
A Decentralized Approach to Nurturing Innovation
This fifth iteration of the iHatch programme is a nationwide capacity-building initiative employing a 'train-the-trainer' model. Each selected hub will serve as a state-level manager, responsible for incubating approximately five startups for at least one year. This structured guidance will equip early-stage founders with essential skills, tools, and strategies for business model refinement, product-market fit, and investor readiness, all while operating within a nationally coordinated implementation framework.
Building on a Legacy of Success: iHatch's Impact
The iHatch program has consistently delivered measurable outcomes since its inception. Previous cohorts have shown significant success in fostering a robust startup ecosystem. For instance, the iHatch Cohort 4, which ran from October 2024 to January 2025, targeted 185 startups and 37 innovation hubs. Its ambitious objectives included: a 90% incorporation rate for startups with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC); 80% of startups developing a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) ready for market testing; and 30% securing investments, grants, or partnerships. Furthermore, Cohort 4 projected the creation of an estimated 1,000 direct and indirect jobs and aimed for 70% of startups to remain operational six months post-program.
Overall, since its inception, the iHatch model has supported over 200 startups, trained 37 innovation hubs, created more than 1,000 direct jobs, and facilitated the development of over 100 market-ready MVPs. These statistics underscore the program's vital role in Nigeria's journey towards digital transformation and economic diversification, aligning with President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.
Data Analysis: The Expanding Horizon of Nigeria's Digital Economy
Nigeria's Digital Economy: A Growth Trajectory (2025-2026)
- 2025 African Startup Funding: The continent's startup ecosystem attracted $3.42 billion in funding in 2025, highlighting the vibrant investment landscape Nigeria operates within.
- 2026 Digital Economy Revenue Projection: Nigeria's digital economy is projected to generate approximately $18.3 billion in revenue by 2026, a substantial leap from $5.09 billion in 2019 and $9.97 billion in 2021. This signifies a near fourfold increase from 2019 and nearly doubles the 2021 figures, reflecting accelerated digital activity.
- 2026 Economic Growth Rate: The Nigerian economy is anticipated to expand by 4.0% in 2026, surpassing the projected global growth rate of 3.1%, driven by robust digital adoption and strategic investments.
- Internet Users (Early 2025): Internet usage climbed to 107 million users as of early 2025, predominantly driven by mobile-first connectivity.
- Telecommunications GDP Contribution (Q2 2025): The telecommunications sector alone contributed approximately 9.2% of Nigeria's real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the second quarter of 2025, emphasizing its foundational role in the digital economy.
The focus on capacity building through initiatives like iHatch is critical to sustaining this growth and ensuring equitable access to digital opportunities across the nation.
The strategic emphasis of iHatch Cohort 5 on developing innovation hubs positions Nigeria to solidify its standing as a leading tech powerhouse in Africa. This move is crucial as the nation's tech and startup ecosystem pivots towards sustainable, value-driven innovation, moving beyond rapid, unchecked expansion. By strengthening the intermediaries that nurture founder development, NITDA aims to create a more resilient and interconnected startup ecosystem, capable of producing the next wave of impactful Nigerian founders and contributing significantly to the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS) and the Nigerian Startup Act. This integrated approach promises to unlock potential in underserved regions, fostering collaboration between state-level hubs and national stakeholders, and ultimately enhancing Nigeria's global competitiveness in the digital age.
