Election 2027: The Silent Takeover? Unpacking APC's Dominance and Opposition's Peril

As Nigeria inches closer to its 2027 general elections, the political landscape is witnessing a dramatic reshaping, raising serious concerns about the fairness of the electoral process and the integrity of public funds. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has consolidated its power through a massive wave of defections from opposition parties, effectively dominating the governorship and legislative fronts. Simultaneously, a growing trend of celebrity and elite endorsements is being leveraged to promote the incumbent government, sparking allegations of illicit financing and a concerted effort to stifle political competition.

The Political Chessboard: Defections and APC's Ascendancy

The political map of Nigeria has been redrawn in an unprecedented manner as of March 2026. The All Progressives Congress (APC) now controls an overwhelming majority of states, with 31 out of Nigeria's 36 state governors belonging to the APC, representing approximately 86.1% of all governors. This dominance is largely attributed to a steady stream of defections from opposition parties, particularly the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The PDP, which initially held 11 governorships after the 2023 general elections, has seen its ranks significantly depleted, reportedly falling to as few as two governors due to ongoing internal crises and strategic political realignments.

These defections have not been limited to the executive arm; the APC has also secured a firm majority in the National Assembly, strengthening its legislative power and effectively weakening the opposition's capacity to challenge reforms or constitutional amendments. Political analysts suggest that in Nigeria's patronage-driven system, electoral victory is often existential, leading to intense elite realignments and cross-carpeting where politicians prioritize survival over ideology.

The Glamour and the Graft: Celebrity Endorsements and Campaign Finance

The run-up to the 2027 elections has seen a noticeable integration of popular culture into political campaigns. Nollywood celebrities and entertainment figures have openly declared support for President Bola Tinubu's prospective re-election bid, with groups like the 'City Boy Movement' actively utilizing urban influence, wealth, and celebrity endorsements for mobilization. Notable personalities, including actresses Remi Surutu, Aremu Afolayan, and actor Yul Edochie, alongside comedian Seyi Law, have been identified as early public supporters or appointees to pro-Tinubu campaign groups like 'Relax Tinubu Is Fixing Nigeria (RTIFN).'

However, this high-profile political engagement is shadowed by persistent concerns about illicit electoral financing and the misuse of public funds. The newly enacted Electoral Act 2026 has significantly increased campaign spending limits, with presidential candidates now permitted to spend up to N10 billion, a substantial increase from the previous N5 billion. Critics argue that this tenfold increase in donation caps risks an 'elite capture of electoral financing,' enabling single individuals or organizations to contribute up to N500 million to candidates. The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over its alleged failure to account for N55.9 billion in election funds from the 2019 general elections, citing concerns about irregular payments and contract irregularities. Furthermore, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has accused the Tinubu administration of weaponizing anti-corruption agencies to coerce defections, labeling it a form of 'state capture.'

'Governors and political leaders are being railroaded into the APC under threat of persecution. This is not politics—it is state capture.'
— Atiku Abubakar, PDP Chieftain

Electoral Integrity Under Scrutiny: Loopholes and Public Distrust

The credibility of Nigeria's electoral system faces significant challenges ahead of 2027. Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have asserted that the Electoral Act 2026 contains flaws that could undermine electoral integrity, entrench the advantage of incumbency, and disenfranchise millions of Nigerians. Concerns have been raised regarding the speed and opacity surrounding the Act's passage, highlighting a lack of legislative transparency. Key provisions, such as discretionary manual backups for electronic result transmission (Section 60(3)) and restricted judicial review, are viewed as dangerous loopholes that could create vulnerabilities in the electoral process.

Public confidence in elections remains fragile, with surveys suggesting that fewer than half of Nigerians trust the electoral commission, a sentiment particularly pronounced among the youth. The Movement for Credible Elections (MCE) has criticized INEC's 2026 guidelines for political parties as 'overregulated, impracticable and insufficient to guarantee credible elections,' warning of potential voter apathy and the exclusion of smaller parties. Critics also point to the lack of strong enforcement mechanisms for campaign finance laws, leading to a history of non-compliance and making overspending a ritual without consequences.

The current political landscape, marked by mass defections and the ruling party's expanding control, has led some to question whether Nigeria is drifting towards a de facto one-party state. A PDP chieftain, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, controversially claimed that the APC would not secure 20% of votes in a truly free and fair election.

The Road to 2027: A Defining Moment

Nigeria's 2027 presidential election is shaping up to be a pivotal moment for the nation's democracy. The intricate web of elite maneuvering, high-profile defections, and concerns over the transparency and financing of political campaigns presents a formidable challenge to electoral integrity. As President Bola Tinubu directs political appointees to resign by March 31, 2026, if they intend to contest elective offices, the administration publicly reaffirms its commitment to a level playing field. However, the widespread distrust in institutions and the apparent structural advantages of the ruling party signal a critical test for whether Nigeria's democracy can truly transcend its entrenched patronage politics and elite domination, or if elections will continue to primarily serve as instruments for redistributing power among a select few.
