Nigeria's Leaders: Why Constant Changes Hurt Us All

Intro: In a country where daily survival is a testament to the Nigerian spirit, the merry-go-round of political leadership, whether it's the high drama of presidential elections or the quiet shuffling of ministerial portfolios, often feels like a distant play. Yet, the echoes of these power shifts, from Aso Rock to your local market, are felt in every naira spent, every meal purchased, and every future dreamt.

What Is Happening on the Ground

The original article talks about 'Seven PMs in a decade' in Britain, painting a picture of 'chaos'. While Britain's parliamentary system allows for such frequent changes without necessarily crippling the nation, Nigeria's context is starkly different. We've seen our own share of political upheavals, albeit through different mechanisms — military coups in the past, and more recently, contentious elections, party defections, and frequent cabinet reshuffles. Each time a new leader or a new team takes the helm, policies shift, projects stall, and the hopes of ordinary Nigerians hang in the balance. It's not just about the President; it's about the entire apparatus of governance, from state governors to local government chairmen. When continuity is broken, so is the trust, and so is the progress. Imagine starting a business, only for the rules of engagement to change every few years because a new government has different priorities. That's the daily reality for many of our entrepreneurs, our farmers, and our market women.

Aunty Bola, a seasoned textile trader in Balogun Market, Lagos, often laments, 'Ah, these politicians. One minute they promise us heaven and earth, the next it's a new face and the same old story. What about us, the common people? Our children need schools, we need food on our tables, and jobs to do.' Her words echo the sentiments of millions across Nigeria.

The Main Issues

The core problem isn't just who sits in power, but the profound impact of inconsistent governance on national development. In Nigeria, the implications of frequent political changes or policy somersaults are devastating. Consider our economy: foreign investors often shy away from environments perceived as unstable, leading to a shortage of capital that could otherwise create vital jobs. Local businesses struggle immensely with shifting regulatory frameworks and unpredictable economic policies. One government might prioritize agriculture, only for the next to shift focus entirely to oil or technology, leaving ongoing agricultural projects abandoned or underfunded. This lack of a consistent, long-term national vision cripples our ability to build critical infrastructure, deliver sustainable healthcare, or reform our education system.

Corruption, too, often thrives in such environments, as new players seek to benefit from short-term opportunities before the political tide turns again. Our youth, in particular, bear the brunt, facing massive unemployment and a dwindling sense of hope as successive governments fail to deliver on promises. The British system's 'chaos' is often a parliamentary maneuver; ours often feels like a fundamental breakdown of trust and progress. We might not have 'seven PMs in a decade' in the same way, but the impact of our political fluidity — from electoral disputes that drag on for months to sudden policy reversals and the frequent reshuffling of cabinet ministers — is just as, if not more, damaging to the everyday Nigerian.

The Impact on Daily Life

For the everyday Nigerian, these political shifts are not abstract news headlines; they are deeply personal struggles. When policies change, the price of fuel can jump overnight, pushing up transport costs for everyone. Food prices become volatile as agricultural policies fluctuate or import restrictions are suddenly imposed. Consider the young graduate who invests years studying a particular skill, only for the government's job creation initiatives to pivot in another direction, or for multinational companies to exit due to an unfavourable business environment, costing thousands of jobs.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the backbone of our economy, find it incredibly difficult to plan for the future when the economic landscape is constantly shifting. They face unpredictable taxes, inconsistent access to credit, and a lack of reliable infrastructure — all worsened by governance instability. Parents worry about the quality of education their children receive, as funding for public schools often depends on the whims of a new administration. Healthcare services, already stretched thin, suffer from interrupted funding and changes in ministerial direction. This constant uncertainty fuels frustration, brain drain (the 'japa' syndrome), and even social unrest, as citizens feel increasingly disenfranchised and unheard. It creates a 'survival mode' mentality where long-term planning gives way to daily hustling, often at great personal cost. Despite Nigeria being ranked as having one of the lowest costs of living globally, the high inflation rate and depreciating currency mean that basic necessities are increasingly unaffordable for many.

What Needs to Be Done

Learning from the British experience, even with their frequent PM changes, is not about copying their system, but understanding the resilience of strong institutions and a politically engaged populace. For Nigeria, the path forward requires a multi-faceted approach. First, we need to strengthen our democratic institutions — from truly independent electoral bodies to a judiciary that commands unwavering public trust. This ensures that transitions, when they occur, are orderly and legitimate, reducing uncertainty.

Second, there must be a greater emphasis on long-term national development plans that transcend individual political tenures. These plans, developed with broad stakeholder input, should guide policy regardless of who is in power. Third, and perhaps most critically, is active citizen participation. Nigerians must hold their leaders accountable, not just at the ballot box, but every single day. Demanding transparency, protesting injustice, and advocating for consistent policy implementation are vital. Our youth, with their energy and innovation, are not just victims; they are powerful agents of change. Empowering them through quality education, skill development, and avenues for civic engagement is paramount.

Finally, fostering a culture of political maturity, where disagreements are resolved through dialogue rather than destructive opposition, is essential for a stable and prosperous Nigeria. We must move beyond the cycle of blame and embrace a collective responsibility for building the Nigeria we all envision. This means a focus on tangible, consistent progress that genuinely improves the lives of ordinary people, shielding them from the constant political turbulence that often only benefits a select few.
