Can We Truly Be Calm? What Nigerians Face Daily

Intro: Every morning, as Mama Ngozi prepares her akara by the roadside in Gboko, her biggest prayer isn't just for good sales, but for safe passage for her children to school. This isn't just a prayer; it's a desperate plea echoing across Nigeria, a nation grappling with a hydra-headed monster called insecurity. While political chieftains like Hon. Olatunbosun Oyintiloye call for calm and support for the Federal Government, the everyday Nigerian is living through a harsh reality where peace feels like a luxury and survival, a daily battle.

What Is Happening on the Ground

Hon. Oyintiloye, a prominent voice from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, recently urged citizens to remain calm and steadfast in their support for the government and security agencies. His message, delivered from the relative calm of political chambers, speaks to an aspiration many Nigerians desperately cling to: the hope that this nightmare will end. Yet, for countless families in places like Kaduna, Zamfara, Benue, and even the fringes of Abuja, 'calm' feels like a word from another dimension. Farmers dare not tend their fields for fear of bandits, traders trek treacherous routes with their lives in their hands, and parents count the minutes until their children return from school, praying they haven't been swept up in the latest wave of abductions. The very fabric of community life is fraying, replaced by suspicion and fear. How can one remain calm when the news headlines scream of fresh attacks, when loved ones go missing, and when the simple act of travelling home for a festival becomes a life-threatening gamble?

'We are tired of just hearing promises. We need to see action. Our lives are on the line every single day,' laments Mallam Musa, a trader whose shop in Katsina has been looted twice. His words echo the sentiments of millions of Nigerians who feel abandoned and unheard.

The Main Issues

The crisis isn't just about bandits or terrorists; it's a complex web of economic hardship, governance gaps, and a breakdown of trust. Years of neglect, underinvestment in education and youth empowerment, and a perceived lack of accountability for perpetrators have created fertile ground for criminal elements. We see communities armed to protect themselves, sometimes turning on each other, further complicating the security landscape. The promise of democracy feels hollow when citizens cannot live freely or pursue their livelihoods. The youth, brimming with potential, often find themselves trapped between unemployment and the siren call of illegal activities, driven by desperation.

Let's look at how daily essentials have shifted:

This simple chart illustrates the harsh economic realities that accompany the security challenges, making life harder for every household.

The Impact on Daily Life

The statistics, while grim, barely scratch the surface of the psychological trauma inflicted on millions. Imagine a child growing up in constant fear, unable to attend school because it's too dangerous, or a farmer losing his life's savings to bandits, forcing his family into destitution. This isn't just about insecurity; it's about the erosion of dreams, the stifling of potential. Businesses are closing down in affected areas, leading to further job losses and pushing more people into poverty. Families are being torn apart as young men and women embark on perilous journeys across the Sahara and the Mediterranean, seeking safety and opportunity that their homeland can no longer provide. The social fabric is under immense strain, with trust diminishing not only between communities but often, tragically, within families themselves as they struggle to cope with unimaginable losses. The healthcare system, already fragile, is overwhelmed by victims of violence and those suffering from stress-related illnesses. The collective mental health of the nation is silently deteriorating, a hidden cost of this ongoing crisis.

What Needs to Be Done

While Hon. Oyintiloye's call for support is understandable, it must be met with tangible results and a clear roadmap for action from the Federal Government. Nigerians are resilient, but their patience is not infinite. Overcoming insecurity requires a multi-pronged approach that goes beyond military might.

Firstly, a complete overhaul of our intelligence gathering and dissemination architecture is crucial. Security agencies must be proactive, not reactive, leveraging technology and community engagement to preempt attacks. Secondly, economic empowerment, especially for the youth in vulnerable communities, is paramount. Investing in education, vocational training, and small businesses can provide viable alternatives to criminality. Thirdly, justice must not only be done but seen to be done. Impunity fuels the cycle of violence; perpetrators, no matter how highly placed, must be brought to book. This includes addressing corruption within the security apparatus itself.

Furthermore, strengthening community policing initiatives, where local residents are integrated into security efforts, can foster trust and provide invaluable local intelligence. Political will, demonstrated through consistent and decisive action, rather than mere rhetoric, is the bedrock upon which any lasting solution must be built. This isn't just a government problem; it's a national emergency that requires a collective effort – from political leaders to religious institutions, from community elders to the vibrant youth. Only when every Nigerian feels secure enough to pursue their daily life without fear can statements of 'overcoming insecurity' truly resonate with the common person.
