Ogun Election: Alake Backs Adebutu, Urges Trust

The dusty roads leading to our local markets, the erratic hum of generators at night, and the constant struggle of small businesses to stay afloat – these are the daily realities for millions in Ogun State, and indeed, across Nigeria. It's a landscape where promises of a better tomorrow often clash with the harsh realities of today. This past Sunday, a hopeful ripple spread through Egbaland as one of its most respected monarchs, the Alake, offered his blessings and a powerful endorsement to a governorship hopeful, stirring conversations about leadership, trust, and the very future of our grassroots communities.

What Is Happening on the Ground

In a significant political development, the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, recently described Oladipupo Adebutu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for Ogun State, as a 'trustworthy and reliable politician'. This endorsement came during a visit by Adebutu and other PDP leaders to the revered Ake Palace in Abeokuta on Sunday.

Adebutu's visit, aimed at seeking the support and blessings of the Egba Traditional Council ahead of the 2027 governorship election, underscored the critical role traditional institutions still play in Nigerian politics, especially at the grassroots level. He was accompanied by his running mate, Lateefat Sowunmi-Kolapo; the PDP senatorial candidate for Ogun Central, Iyabo Obasanjo; the Ogun State PDP Chairman, Abayomi Tella; and a host of other party stalwarts and candidates.

During the visit, Oba Gbadebo recounted a long-standing relationship with Adebutu's father, the renowned businessman and philanthropist Sir Kensington Adebutu. The monarch shared a compelling anecdote, recalling their shared club membership of over 30 years. He narrated how, when the club struggled to acquire a permanent secretariat, Baba Adebutu single-handedly paid for a building opposite the City Hall in Lagos, instructing members to keep their contributions. This act of generosity, the Alake suggested, was evidence of the family's deep-rooted character and reliability. Drawing a direct comparison, the monarch expressed profound confidence in the PDP candidate, stating, 'The son of a lion must resemble the lion. In fact, he is an even better version of his father.'

The Alake's blessing was clear: 'I am pleased to present Oladipupo Adebutu to all of you as a man who is trustworthy and reliable. May God be with you and continue to stand by you.' This traditional endorsement, steeped in cultural reverence and historical ties, carries significant weight in shaping public perception and trust among the local populace.

The Main Issues

Beyond the customary pleasantries and traditional blessings, Adebutu used the platform to address some of the most pressing governance realities that plague our nation, particularly at the local level. His core pledge, if elected governor, is to grant full financial autonomy to local governments. This isn't just a political promise; it's a direct challenge to a system that, for decades, has stifled grassroots development.

Currently, local governments across Nigeria often remain mere appendages of state governments, their allocations frequently controlled or diverted, leaving them unable to fulfil their constitutional mandate of delivering services to the people. Adebutu didn't mince words, accusing governors across party lines – both APC and PDP – of 'embezzling local government allocations,' calling it an 'open secret.' This explosive claim shines a harsh light on the systemic corruption that starves local communities of vital resources, thereby crippling their ability to address daily struggles.

Adebutu argued that when local councils had direct access to their funds, there was noticeable development, and monarchs were carried along in the scheme of things. This highlights a nostalgic look at a past when local governance was more impactful. His assertion strikes a chord with ordinary Nigerians who witness firsthand the decay of local infrastructure, the absence of basic amenities, and the widening gap between the government and the governed.

Furthermore, the PDP candidate advocated for a shift in how infrastructure projects are financed, stating, 'You don’t borrow money for infrastructure anymore.' He vowed to improve road connectivity between Ogun State and Lagos and prioritise electricity through partnerships with private investors, promising that improved power supply would stimulate economic growth and create jobs. These are not abstract concepts; they are the very arteries of our economy and the backbone of daily survival for millions.

The Impact on Daily Life

Let's be clear: when local government funds are diverted, it isn't just a number on a ledger; it's a direct blow to the pockets and livelihoods of everyday Nigerians. Consider the market women, who brave dilapidated feeder roads daily to bring their produce to sell. Bad roads mean increased transport costs, damaged goods, and longer travel times, all of which translate to higher prices for consumers and reduced profits for the hardworking traders. Small businesses, the bedrock of youth survival and local economies, are crippled by this neglect. A tailor relies on steady power; without it, expensive generator fuel eats into profits, or worse, clients are lost. A welder cannot operate, a hairdresser cannot run their salon effectively. This constant struggle against inadequate infrastructure means fewer jobs for our youth, stifled innovation, and a continuous drain on family incomes.

Adebutu's promise of local government autonomy directly addresses these daily struggles. Imagine a scenario where local councils, with direct access to their funds, can quickly repair community roads, install streetlights, equip local primary health centres, and maintain boreholes. This translates to lower transport costs, healthier communities, safer neighbourhoods, and more time for productive activities instead of fetching water or queuing for scarce resources. When local governments truly function, they empower local markets, create an enabling environment for small enterprises, and directly alleviate the burden on the average citizen.

His pledge to improve electricity through private partnerships is equally critical. Stable power is not a luxury; it's an economic imperative. For young entrepreneurs venturing into tech, for artisans honing their craft, or for students trying to study at night, consistent electricity is the difference between success and stagnation. Reliable power reduces operational costs for businesses, attracts investors, and can be the catalyst for the creation of thousands of new jobs, particularly for our vibrant but often unemployed youth population.

Without transparent governance and proper allocation of funds, the cost of living spirals. Food prices increase because of logistical challenges, healthcare becomes expensive due to lack of local facilities, and education suffers from poorly maintained schools. The comparison chart below illustrates this stark reality:

What Needs to Be Done

While political endorsements and promises are a regular feature of our election cycles, the gravity of Adebutu's statements on local government autonomy and embezzlement cannot be overstated. For a nation grappling with widespread poverty and infrastructural decay, the solutions lie not just in electing 'trustworthy and reliable' individuals, but in establishing systems that promote transparency, accountability, and genuine grassroots development.

Firstly, the conversation around local government autonomy must move beyond political rhetoric and become a constitutional reality, rigorously enforced. This requires a collective will from federal, state, and local actors to respect the financial independence of the third tier of government. Secondly, concrete mechanisms for accountability must be put in place. It's not enough to release funds; there must be robust oversight to ensure they are used for their intended purpose. Community development associations, traditional rulers, and civil society organisations have a crucial role to play in monitoring projects and demanding transparency.

Furthermore, citizens themselves must become more engaged. The 'everyday reader' must translate their daily struggles into a demand for better governance, holding elected officials accountable beyond election cycles. Educating oneself about local government budgets and demanding public hearings on projects can empower communities to reclaim their resources. Lastly, the focus on alternative financing for infrastructure and strong private sector partnerships is a realistic approach to overcoming Nigeria's development challenges without plunging future generations into deeper debt. This requires a stable regulatory environment and policies that attract credible investors.

As Ogun State looks towards 2027, the dialogue sparked by Adebutu's visit to the Alake's palace reminds us that effective governance, particularly at the local level, is not just about politics; it's about the very survival and prosperity of our people. It's about ensuring that the 'son of a lion' truly embodies the strength and character needed to build a brighter future for all.
