Nigeria's Escalating Insecurity: A Nation Under Siege in March 2026

Intro: As Nigeria grapples with a deepening security crisis in March 2026, the nation finds itself under an intensifying siege from multifaceted threats. Persistent banditry, a resurgence of insurgency, and deadly communal clashes have cast a long shadow over vast swathes of the country, pushing millions into humanitarian despair and threatening macroeconomic stability. The year 2026 has begun with a stark reminder of the challenges ahead, as evidenced by Nigeria's fourth-place ranking in the recently released 2026 Global Terrorism Index, a position reflecting a concerning 43% rise in terror attacks from 2024 to 2025.

What’s Really Happening

The security landscape across Nigeria is defined by a complex web of overlapping threats that stretch the capacity of the state and test the resilience of its security institutions. From the North-East, where Boko Haram and its splinter factions, including the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and a resurgent Jama'atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda'awati wal-Jihad (JAS), continue to mount coordinated assaults, mass abductions, and suicide bombings, to the North-West and North-Central regions plagued by rampant banditry and farmer-herder conflicts, no single area remains untouched.

Recent months have seen a brutal escalation in violence. Early January 2026 witnessed a wave of horrific attacks in the Middle Belt, claiming over 50 lives, including a massacre in Kasuwan Daji where 42 men were slaughtered after having their arms tied behind their backs. February brought further tragedy with a terrorist attack in Woro, Kwara State, that killed 162 individuals and saw 176 kidnapped, while Katsina State reported 35 fatalities within just 24 hours from fresh assaults. Most recently, March 2026 has been marked by a triple suicide bombing in Maiduguri, Borno State, alongside reports of military bases being breached by ISWAP in Ngoshe and other locations. The Nigerian Army, however, has also recorded successes, notably neutralizing dozens of armed bandits in a fierce gun battle at kingpin Bello Turji's notorious hideout in Zamfara and Sokoto States in late March 2026.

Beyond the direct fatalities, the nature of insecurity has evolved. Non-state armed groups are increasingly targeting civilians and military personnel, exploiting ungoverned spaces, and embedding themselves within local economies. This shift indicates a move beyond sporadic attacks towards forms of economic control, with criminal and extremist networks showing significant overlap. The proliferation of weapons across the Sahel and Nigeria's porous borders continue to facilitate the movement and expansion of these armed groups, making internal security gains fragile.

The convergence of insecurity, political narratives, and digital misinformation is no longer incidental—it is systemic, posing a significant threat to national cohesion as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections. This complex interplay demands a multi-pronged, adaptable response that transcends traditional military solutions.

Data Breakdown

The human cost of Nigeria's insecurity crisis is staggering, with millions displaced and facing severe humanitarian needs. As of March 2026, Nigeria hosts one of the largest internally displaced populations in Africa, with approximately 3.6 million IDPs across multiple regions, and some UN-affiliated reports suggesting the figure could exceed 8 million by mid-2025.

Key displacement figures include:

• North-East: 2.29 million IDPs, primarily due to insurgency (92%) and communal clashes (6%).
• North-West: 650,345 IDPs.
• North-Central: 601,697 IDPs.

Market or Policy Impact

The spiraling insecurity has profound and devastating impacts on Nigeria's economy and policy frameworks. It severely threatens trade corridors, supply chains, and market access, leading to mounting risks for businesses and investors. The disruption of agricultural activities, particularly in regions like Zamfara and Katsina where production has plummeted by 35%, is exacerbating food insecurity nationwide and driving up food prices. This, combined with a general increase in business operating costs due to security concerns, contributes to inflationary pressures and erodes household purchasing power.

Furthermore, insecurity deters both domestic and foreign investment. Firms are forced to divert resources towards security personnel rather than productive investments, a phenomenon visible in sectors like oil and tourism. While Nigeria has seen efforts towards economic reforms, such as fuel subsidy removal and exchange rate unification, the immediate effect has been sharply higher prices, intensifying poverty, and inequality for many households who lack adequate social safety nets. Over 63% of the population is now estimated to be below the poverty line, a significant increase from prior to the reforms.

In response, the Nigerian government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has intensified efforts. A state of emergency on national security was declared in November 2025, followed by heightened military operations like 'Operation Savannah Shield' in the North-Central region, deploying military, police, and forest guard units. The 2026 budget also reflects this priority, allocating a substantial N5.41 trillion towards defense and security, aimed at modernizing equipment and enhancing intelligence-led policing. President Tinubu has also engaged in diplomatic discussions with international partners, including the UK and France, to secure military equipment and support. The European Union formalized its first defense dialogue with Nigeria in February 2026, committing over €700 million between 2015 and 2025 for security and humanitarian aid, with an additional €234.4 million specifically for Nigeria's security task force. The US has also deployed soldiers to Nigeria in March 2026 to train and advise local forces.

What Needs to Change

Despite increased governmental and international efforts, the pervasive nature of insecurity in Nigeria demands sustained and adaptive strategies. Experts emphasize the need for a comprehensive security approach that combines intelligence-led operations, international partnerships, and institutional reforms. The current military operations, while yielding some successes against bandit kingpins like Bello Turji, need to be complemented by robust intelligence gathering and proactive disruption of criminal and extremist networks before they manifest into large-scale attacks.

A critical area for reform is addressing the economic drivers of violence. High youth unemployment, poverty, and a weak state presence in rural areas create fertile ground for recruitment by armed groups. Policies must focus on strengthening climate-resilient livelihoods, restoring agricultural production, and creating economic opportunities, especially for youth and women in affected regions. The FAO's 2026-2028 Emergency and Resilience Plan, which requires USD 347 million to support 12.6 million vulnerable people, highlights this urgent need. Community-based early warning systems and local conflict resolution mechanisms are also vital to preventing escalation.

Furthermore, the government must address the widening trust deficit, particularly in the run-up to the 2027 elections. The spread of disinformation and perceptions of leadership gaps can amplify public grief and anger, creating a 'volatile compound sentiment.' Transparent communication strategies and visible accountability for abuses by security forces are essential to rebuilding public confidence and fostering cooperation. While the Senate President has expressed optimism that banditry will end in 2026, the complex and evolving nature of the crisis requires more than rhetoric; it demands consistent, well-resourced, and community-centric interventions to transition Nigeria from a state of perennial crisis to one of sustainable peace and development.
