'Sinners' Rewrites Oscar History with Unprecedented Nominations

Ryan Coogler's genre-defying masterpiece, 'Sinners', emerged as the undeniable behemoth of the 98th Academy Awards, shattering records with an astounding 16 nominations. This figure surpassed the previous record of 14 nominations, a benchmark held by cinematic titans like 'All About Eve', 'Titanic', and 'La La Land'. Mosaku's nomination was one of several for the film, with co-stars Michael B. Jordan receiving a Best Actor nod and Delroy Lindo earning a Best Supporting Actor nomination, further cementing 'Sinners'' historic impact on the industry. The film, released in 2025, captivated audiences and critics alike, blending supernatural and historical themes and resonating deeply with its exploration of racism and identity.

The ceremony, hosted for the second consecutive year by Conan O'Brien, celebrated the best films of 2025. While Paul Thomas Anderson's 'One Battle After Another' ultimately clinched the coveted Best Picture award, 'Sinners' remained a central talking point, illustrating a significant shift towards more diverse storytelling and representation within the Academy's selections.

Wunmi Mosaku: A Milestone for Nigerian Representation

Wunmi Mosaku's journey to her first Oscar nomination is a testament to two decades of dedicated craft and a powerful symbol for aspiring African actors worldwide. Born in Zaria, Nigeria, and raised in Manchester, UK, Mosaku has steadily built an impressive career with notable roles in international productions such such as 'Lovecraft Country' and 'Loki'. Her portrayal of Annie, a Hoodoo priestess in 'Sinners', was particularly lauded, earning her a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress in February 2026, making her the first Black British actress to win that category at the BAFTA Film Awards. This critical acclaim positioned her as a strong contender at the Oscars, where she competed in a highly competitive category alongside talents like Elle Fanning and Teyana Taylor.

While Mosaku did not take home the Oscar this year, her nomination itself is a monumental achievement, strengthening Nigeria's footprint on the global screen and highlighting the growing influence of Nigerian and African diaspora talent in shaping global narratives. Her presence at such a prestigious event, making her Oscars debut in an emerald green Louis Vuitton dress, was widely celebrated. As she noted on the red carpet, the role in 'Sinners' felt 'divinely placed', an experience many actors dream of.
