Transforming Content Discovery and Creation with Advanced AI

The core of this partnership lies in leveraging Google Cloud’s advanced generative AI to revolutionize how CANAL+ indexes, discovers, and produces content. By utilizing sophisticated content video indexing capabilities, CANAL+ will accelerate the classification of its extensive content library, creating an in-depth multimodal database that combines sound, video, and text data. This enriched classification will enable the CANAL+ App to offer significantly sharper and more personalized content recommendations on its homepage, meticulously matching subscriber preferences based on their individual viewing habits. This initiative aims to make content discovery easier and more engaging, thereby enhancing overall subscriber satisfaction across its diverse markets.

Stéphane Baumier, Chief Technology Officer of CANAL+, highlighted the strategic importance, stating, “Content video indexing for CANAL+ at scale gives the group a significant edge, notably by enabling us to deliver sharper discovery and truly enhanced personalized journeys on the CANAL+ App across all our markets.”.

Beyond viewer experience, the collaboration extends to empowering creative teams and production partners. CANAL+ will adopt Google's Veo3, a next-generation AI video technology. This innovative tool will allow creators to previsualize scenes before filming or even recreate historical moments from a single archival photo, dramatically expanding creative possibilities and streamlining production workflows. Matt Renner, President and Chief Revenue Officer of Google Cloud, emphasized the broader impact, noting that CANAL+ is “not just adopting tools; they are architecting the future of media and fundamentally transforming the entertainment landscape on a global scale.”.

Strategic Imperatives: Growth, Personalization, and Market Leadership

The integration of AI is a crucial component of CANAL+'s aggressive growth strategy, which includes a formidable target of reaching 100 million subscribers by 2030. This ambition is particularly pertinent in African markets, where CANAL+ aims to overcome existing challenges such as high DStv installation costs, which currently stand at approximately €38 in MultiChoice territories compared to €13 in traditional CANAL+ markets. The company plans to introduce subsidies, expand sales outlets, and inject a €100 million boost plan to stimulate growth in these regions.

This partnership with Google Cloud is also seen as a strategic move to rival the sophisticated recommendation algorithms of global streaming giants like Netflix, positioning CANAL+ at the forefront of digital media innovation in a highly competitive industry. The secure technical environment guaranteed by Google Cloud ensures that intellectual property rights and asset ownership remain deeply protected throughout these advanced AI operations.

CANAL+ has forecasted an adjusted EBIT of €735 million and over €250 million in free cash flow for 2026, indicating a strong financial outlook alongside these technological advancements. As the deployment commences in June 2026, the African entertainment sector is poised for a significant transformation, promising subscribers an unparalleled level of personalization and content discovery.
