Beyond Foreign Aid: Falana Calls on Nigeria to Emulate Iran's Indigenous Defense Strategy

Abuja, Nigeria – Prominent human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has issued a stark warning to the Nigerian government, urging a fundamental re-evaluation of its national security strategy. Speaking on Channels Television's 'Politics Today' programme on Thursday, March 12, 2026, Falana emphatically called on Nigeria to bolster its internal security architecture and reduce its dependence on foreign powers, particularly the United States, for stability.

Falana's admonition arrives amidst a backdrop of escalating hostilities in the Middle East, with a major conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran commencing on February 28, 2026. This conflict, marked by joint U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on Iran and subsequent missile retaliations, has resulted in significant humanitarian costs, including over 1,300 civilian deaths in Iran and approximately 3.2 million displaced individuals.

Emulating Iran's Self-Sufficiency Model

Drawing a direct parallel, Falana urged Nigeria to learn from Iran's approach to national sovereignty and defense. He stated, "Nigeria must wake up. We must learn from Iran that unless you reorganise your own country, unless you equip your armed forces and your police force, there is no way an imperialist country like America will guarantee law and order in your country." His critique extended to US President Donald Trump, whom he accused of exhibiting "contemptuous disregard for international law and United Nations resolutions," citing Trump's withdrawal of the US from some 66 UN resolutions.

Iran, despite facing stringent international sanctions, has achieved remarkable self-sufficiency in its defense sector. Reports indicate that over 90% of the equipment used by its armed forces is domestically designed and manufactured. The country has developed more than 7,000 defense systems across various domains, including space, air, sea, and land. This indigenous capability is exemplified by the deployment of modern vessels like the Dena destroyer, which joined the Iranian Navy in 2022 and has since navigated over 55,000 kilometers across five oceans. Before the 1979 revolution, Iran's military relied on just 31 defense systems; today, it operates over 900 indigenous defense systems, encompassing everything from ballistic missiles to unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The defense industry employs between 35,000 and 45,000 individuals.

Nigeria's Security Spending Amidst Declining Foreign Aid

In Nigeria, national security has been identified as the foremost government priority in President Bola Tinubu's ₦58.18 trillion (approximately US$41.6 billion) 2026 Appropriation Bill, presented in December 2025. The budget allocates ₦5.41 trillion (about US$3.86 billion) to defense and internal security, representing the largest sectoral allocation for the third consecutive year. This prioritisation comes as Nigeria faces significant reductions in global development assistance. For instance, the 2025 Humanitarian Response Plan, which sought $910 million for Nigeria, received only 24% of the required funding.

An initial report assessing training facilities for Nigeria's security agencies estimates that approximately $100 billion will be required to upgrade institutions, expand recruitment, and reassign personnel. Falana also castigated the Nigerian government over the non-operational status of state-owned refineries, despite an estimated $2.9 billion reportedly spent on their maintenance, with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) now solely relying on the Dangote Refinery.

Data Analysis: Nigeria's 2026 Budget Allocations (Top Sectors)

An analysis of Nigeria's 2026 budget reveals the significant emphasis placed on security relative to other critical sectors. The ₦5.41 trillion allocated to security constitutes approximately 9.30% of the total ₦58.18 trillion budget. This contrasts with other vital allocations such as infrastructure, education, and healthcare.

Falana’s call underscores a growing sentiment for Nigeria to harness its own potential and resources for national defense and development, moving away from external reliance, a strategy that Iran has demonstrably pursued with notable success in its defense industrial complex. He urged the Federal Government to "return to the drawing board" to strengthen Nigeria's security institutions, recalling the commendable historical performance of Nigerian troops in international peacekeeping missions, including operations under the United Nations and the ECOWAS Monitoring Group (ECOMOG).
