Bello's Warning: What It Means for Kogi's Streets and Stomachs

Intro: In the heart of Nigeria, where the daily struggle for survival often overshadows grand political pronouncements, a recent statement from former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has sent ripples across the landscape. Imagine Mama Nkechi in Lokoja market, painstakingly arranging her tomatoes under the searing sun, her mind fixated on the soaring price of garri and her children's school fees. She isn't thinking about 'political criminals,' but about how to make ends meet. Yet, it's these very political currents that often dictate the ebb and flow of her daily struggle. Bello's stark warning, delivered in a video addressing his supporters, about 'political criminals' facing consequences, while simultaneously speaking of leading the state and the country to the 'Promised Land,' highlights a jarring contrast that everyday Nigerians often grapple with.

What Is Happening on the Ground

The former governor's words were direct and unambiguous: 'The political criminals within us in Kogi State, get ready. The political criminals within Kogi Central, get ready. We are coming after you.' He didn't name names, but made it clear that those who felt targeted should reflect on their actions, particularly those using their 'mouth to malign' him. This isn't just political rhetoric; in a state like Kogi, with a history of fierce political contests and, at times, tension, such statements carry significant weight. For many, it immediately evokes a sense of apprehension. Will this lead to a crackdown on dissent? Will opposition voices be silenced? The 'old time is gone,' Bello declared, heralding a 'new era' under Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. But for citizens, the question remains: what does this 'new era' truly mean for their freedoms and their daily bread? It's a reality where political declarations often translate into tangible impacts on the streets – from heightened security presence to an atmosphere of cautious silence among those who might otherwise speak up. Civic groups have already condemned such rhetoric, stating it undermines democratic principles and civil liberties.

A young Keffi street vendor, who wished to remain anonymous, put it simply: 'Every time they talk about 'criminals' and 'coming after you,' it's ordinary people who suffer. The market gets slow, people are scared to talk, and everything just feels tighter. When will they just focus on giving us light and good roads?'

The Main Issues

At the core of this pronouncement lies a critical examination of democratic principles. In a vibrant democracy, the robust exchange of ideas, even critical ones, is fundamental. When political opponents are branded 'criminals' for merely 'maligning' someone's character through speech, it blurs the lines between legitimate political opposition and actual criminal activity. This conflation can have dangerous implications, stifling freedom of expression, discouraging political participation, and creating an environment where fear trumps dialogue. The concept of 'criminality is criminality' is unarguable in the context of actual law-breaking. However, when applied to political discourse, it opens a Pandora's Box of potential abuses. Who defines 'political criminality'? Is it criticism, protest, or genuine malfeasance? The lack of clear distinctions can be weaponized against those who hold dissenting views, turning political disagreements into perceived threats against the state or incumbent power. This also raises questions about the rule of law and due process. In a nation striving for good governance, accountability should be sought through established legal frameworks, not through public warnings that can be interpreted as veiled threats. The confidence expressed in the current state and national leadership to lead the country to a 'Promised Land' feels hollow to many when juxtaposed with rhetoric that seems to narrow the space for diverse political opinions. Such political violence and threats restrict voters' ability to participate freely in elections and can empower politicians to subvert the electoral process.

The Impact on Daily Life

The real weight of such political pronouncements falls squarely on the shoulders of the everyday Nigerian. When political tension escalates, fear often becomes a silent companion. Market activities can slow down as people become wary of gathering. Transporters might face increased checkpoints or unforeseen delays, adding to their already slim profit margins. For students, the specter of political unrest can disrupt academic calendars or even lead to unsafe conditions. Small business owners, already grappling with high inflation, unreliable power, and multiple taxes, find themselves in an even more precarious position. Kogi State, for instance, has been identified as one of the most expensive states to live in Nigeria, with high inflation rates impacting goods and food prices. Investors, both local and foreign, often shy away from regions perceived as politically unstable, drying up vital capital flows that could create jobs and boost local economies. The promise of a 'Promised Land' feels distant when the immediate reality is one of political threats and heightened uncertainty. Resources that could be channeled into improving public schools, upgrading healthcare facilities, or providing essential infrastructure are often seen by citizens as being consumed by political maneuvering and security concerns arising from internal conflicts. Youth, already facing astronomical unemployment rates across Nigeria, are particularly vulnerable. Nigeria's youth unemployment rate was 6.50% in the second quarter of 2024, but other reports indicate a much higher rate of 23% actively looking for work and 32% out of employment altogether, with nearly 80 million young people, about 53% of the youth population, currently unemployed. Many are either disillusioned, leading to a brain drain, or, in some unfortunate cases, drawn into the periphery of political thuggery out of sheer desperation and lack of viable alternatives. The average monthly salary in Kogi is significantly less than the average cost of living for a single person. The daily struggle for food, shelter, and security becomes even more arduous under the shadow of political brinkmanship.

The contrast between what is promised and what is often delivered in the political landscape is stark, particularly for the youth who bear the brunt of governance realities. Let's look at a simplified comparison of focus areas:

What Needs to Be Done

For Nigeria to truly move towards its 'Promised Land,' the focus must shift dramatically from political strong-arming to genuine, people-centric governance. Leaders must understand that true strength lies not in silencing critics, but in addressing the very issues that fuel discontent. First, there needs to be a clear distinction between political opposition and criminality. Due process and the rule of law must be upheld rigorously, ensuring that any allegations of criminal behavior are investigated and prosecuted through proper channels, not through public pronouncements that could be seen as political intimidation. Second, leaders must prioritize tangible development. Instead of rhetorical battles, let the focus be on building functional schools, equipping hospitals, creating sustainable job opportunities for the burgeoning youth population, and ensuring basic amenities like electricity and potable water are accessible to all. This requires transparency, accountability, and a willingness to engage with diverse voices, even critical ones. Third, civil society organizations, the media, and citizens must continue to demand good governance and hold leaders accountable. It is in the collective voice of the people that the true power of democracy lies. The 'new era' should be defined by an open, inclusive political space where ideas flourish, not one where fear silences dissent. Only then can the struggles of Mama Nkechi and millions of other Nigerians begin to ease, and the path to a genuine 'Promised Land' become clearer, paved not with threats, but with progress and justice.
