Insurgent Attacks in Borno State Lead to Abduction of Women and Children, Displacing Thousands

Borno State, Nigeria, is once again at the epicentre of a severe humanitarian crisis in March 2026, as insurgent groups, primarily Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), have intensified their attacks. These coordinated assaults have resulted in the abduction of hundreds of women and children and the displacement of thousands of individuals, exacerbating an already dire security situation in the North-East region. The resurgence in violence underscores the persistent threat posed by these groups, despite ongoing military operations.

Recent weeks have witnessed a significant escalation of hostilities. Between March 3 and 4, 2026, insurgents launched coordinated attacks along the Ngoshe–Gwoza axis in Borno State, overwhelming a Nigerian Army Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Ngoshe. During these brutal assaults, more than 100 women and children were abducted, with other reports indicating the figure could be as high as 300 civilians, including women and children. This mass abduction has sent shockwaves through the region, echoing past tragedies. Simultaneously, these attacks led to the large-scale displacement of approximately 12,402 individuals, comprising 2,067 households, who sought refuge in the town of Pulka within Gwoza Local Government Area (LGA).

Further compounding the crisis, on March 11, 2026, Boko Haram terrorists reportedly overran a military base and subsequently sacked Kirawa town in Gozah County (Gwoza LGA). This incident forced thousands of locals to flee across the border into neighbouring Cameroon, seeking safety from the violence. The period between March 5 and 6, 2026, also saw coordinated attacks on military formations in Konduga, Mainok, Jakana, and Marte, leading to significant casualties among Nigerian troops, including the deaths of commanding officers. Earlier in March, an attack on a Forward Operations Base in Mayanti, Bama LGA, on March 1, resulted in the death of its commander and three soldiers.

Humanitarian Impact and State Response

The continuous wave of attacks and abductions has deepened the humanitarian crisis in Borno State. As of November 2024, Borno State alone hosted 1.7 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) and 886,275 returnees, highlighting its critical role in the ongoing humanitarian response in Nigeria's North-East. The recent displacements in Ngoshe and Kirawa add to this already overwhelming burden. Humanitarian partners, with the endorsement of the Nigerian government, launched an urgent appeal in February 2026, seeking US$516 million to provide lifesaving support to 2.5 million people in the Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe (BAY) states. Women and children constitute a staggering 8 out of every 10 people in immediate need, underscoring their particular vulnerability in the conflict.

Reports also indicate concerns regarding the Borno State Government's efforts to close IDP camps and encourage returns to communities that may still lack adequate security and basic services. Figures suggest that as many as 160,000 IDPs have been forcibly relocated to areas with limited access to humanitarian assistance and persistent safety concerns due to the presence of non-state armed groups.

In response to the escalating insecurity, the Borno State government convened an emergency Security Council meeting on March 11, 2026, announcing new security measures. The council urged the military to review and improve its operational tactics to effectively counter the recent surge in Boko Haram and ISWAP attacks. The Nigerian military has reported ongoing operations to target and clear insurgent hideouts and has also engaged in stabilization efforts and airstrikes, reportedly eliminating over 50 insurgents in response to the Ngoshe attacks. Furthermore, the Federal Government, through the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, affirmed its commitment to addressing insecurity and is collaborating with the international community to restore peace and stability across the nation. President Bola Tinubu, on November 26, 2025, declared a national security emergency, calling for additional military recruitment and redeployment of police officers to reinforce ground troops in affected regions.

Data Analysis: Recent Abductions in Borno State (Q4 2025 - Q1 2026)

The data reveals a concerning trend of mass abductions targeting vulnerable populations. While individual incidents may vary in scale, the collective impact signifies a deteriorating protection environment for women and children in Borno State.

The chart above illustrates the stark contrast in the number of individuals abducted in two significant incidents in Borno State during late 2025 and early 2026. The Ngoshe abduction in March 2026, with over 300 reported victims, represents a dramatic increase compared to the 7 individuals abducted in Shikarkir Ward in November 2025. This escalation in the scale of abductions underscores the heightened operational capability of insurgent groups and the severe risks faced by communities. These figures, while representing specific documented events, are indicative of a broader pattern of insecurity and vulnerability. The large-scale abduction in Ngoshe alone accounts for a significant portion of the total abductions reported in recent months, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced protective measures and sustained military intervention. The estimated 12,402 newly displaced persons from the Ngoshe attacks further highlight the immediate and widespread humanitarian consequences of these insurgent activities.

The situation in Borno State remains complex and highly volatile. While military operations are ongoing, the coordinated nature and increased intensity of recent insurgent attacks, coupled with the alarming rate of abductions and displacements, present a formidable challenge to peace and stability in the region. The urgent humanitarian needs, particularly for women and children, demand sustained and coordinated efforts from both governmental and international bodies to provide protection, assistance, and durable solutions for the affected populations.
