Flutterwave Unlocks Africa's $1.5 Trillion Digital Future: A Call for Payments Superhighways at IMF-World Bank Meetings
Flutterwave urged stronger financial infrastructure for Africa's digital economy at the April 2026 IMF-World Bank Meetings, highlighting a projected $1.5 trillion digital economy by 2030 and a cross-border payments market reaching $336.49 billion by 2031.
WASHINGTON D.C. – In a resounding call to action on the global stage, leading African payments technology company Flutterwave has underscored the critical need for a fortified financial infrastructure to accelerate the growth and resilience of the continent's burgeoning digital economy. Speaking on the sidelines of the highly anticipated 2026 IMF-World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington D.C. (April 13-18), Flutterwave executives emphasized that robust, interconnected payment systems are not just an aspiration but a fundamental prerequisite for Africa to unlock its full economic potential. The company's advocacy comes as projections indicate Africa's digital economy is poised to reach an astounding $1.5 trillion by 2030, making the push for seamless digital and fiat currency integration more urgent than ever.
Building Africa's Payments Superhighway
Flutterwave, in collaboration with Invest Africa Ltd, convened an exclusive Digital Economy Roundtable on April 14, 2026, bringing together a distinguished assembly of policymakers, global investors, development finance institutions, and technology leaders. The central theme of the discussions revolved around crafting a 'payments superhighway' for Africa – a concept championed by Flutterwave's leadership, including Chief Legal, Regulatory and Public Policy Officer Bankole Falade, and Head of SME Business Bolanle Baruwa.
This 'superhighway' aims to significantly accelerate cross-border payments and investment flows, which are deemed critical to catalyzing large-scale economic expansion across the continent. The dialogue focused on three strategic pillars: scaling cross-border digital infrastructure, strengthening fintech integration and regulatory harmonization, and mobilizing essential investment capital.
Bankole Falade elaborated on the vision, stating,
'When Flutterwave started 10 years ago, the primary goal was to connect fragmented payment infrastructure across the continent. When businesses are able to make and receive payments, economies grow and businesses thrive. What we've done is connect these disconnected islands with one API. As we look forward to the next 10 years, what we want to do is connect Africa to the rest of the world, and the world to Africa, with seamless payment solutions.'
— Bankole Falade, Chief Legal, Regulatory and Public Policy Officer, Flutterwave
Navigating Regulatory Landscapes and Mobilizing Capital
A significant aspect of Flutterwave's advocacy at the meetings was the call for 'regulatory passporting.' This mechanism, proposed by Falade, aims to reduce cross-border entry barriers and foster deeper continental integration for digital scale. The company highlighted that ongoing macroeconomic reforms and policy modernization in various African markets are already bolstering investor confidence, creating favorable conditions for increased capital deployment. Indeed, Africa's digital transformation market size is anticipated to grow from USD 30.24 billion in 2025 to USD 34.97 billion in 2026, with a forecast to reach USD 72.23 billion by 2031 at a 15.62% CAGR.
The current state of cross-border payments in Africa presents both immense opportunities and significant challenges. In 2024, Sub-Saharan Africa notably remained the most expensive region globally for sending money, with an average cost of 8.45% to send $200. However, the landscape is rapidly evolving. Cross-border payment volumes are projected to increase by 5% annually until 2027, with the global market size expected to hit $250 trillion. Specifically for Africa, the cross-border payments market is projected to be USD 222.23 billion in 2025, growing to USD 238.14 billion in 2026, and is forecast to reach USD 336.49 billion by 2031 at a CAGR of 7.16%. Mobile money platforms, particularly in West Africa, are playing a pivotal role, processing approximately USD 498 billion in transactions in 2025.
The Trajectory of Digital Financial Growth in Africa
The imperative for stronger financial infrastructure is underpinned by the continent's impressive digital growth trajectory. The World Bank estimates that Africa's digital economy could be worth $180 billion by 2025. This growth is further fueled by rising digital commerce, with Ebanx forecasting digital commerce to reach $72 billion in 2026. Such figures highlight the urgent need for interoperable systems that can seamlessly connect African markets internally and to global financial networks.
A diverse array of stakeholders attended Flutterwave's roundtable, including Ghana's Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Nigeria's Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, and executives from leading global institutions such as Google, the Gates Foundation, Bank of America, Afreximbank, and Citibank. Their presence underscored the growing recognition of Africa's central role in the future of global digital transformation.
Africa's Digital Economy & Cross-Border Payments Market Growth
As Africa's digital future moves from policy to action in 2026, the operationalization of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) frameworks, including digital identity and payment platforms, will be crucial. Flutterwave's proactive engagement at global forums like the IMF-World Bank Spring Meetings solidifies its position as a key enabler of Africa's digital transformation, advocating for an inclusive, efficient, and interconnected financial ecosystem that will serve its vibrant and growing population.
